Paul studied at the Purcell School for young musicians in London. After a couple of years touring as oboist with the Gloria Theatre Company he took up a place to read music, and a Choral Scholarship, at Magdalen College, Oxford. After graduation in 1994 he became a Lay Clerk with Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford, where he spent five years. During that time he formed the duo Belshazzar’s Feast (with Paul Hutchinson) and quartet Dr Faustus.
Belshazzar’s Feast gigged as "The 2 Pauls" in 2006 but have now reverted to their original name. He also sings with acappella ensemble Mouth and Trousers.
He received the English Folk Dance & Song Society 75th Anniversary Award (Andover) in 2007.
