Reviews

Lady of the Sea gives the album has an energetic and upbeat opener, followed by two slower and more mellow tracks which are also excellent. They reminded me of student days spent enjoying the summer without a care in the world.

The middle of the album from The White Hare onwards shows a dip in form but things pick up again with The Riflemen of War’s engaging hypnotic chant. Overall an excellent album.

Freedom Fields opens with the fantastically exhilarating Lady of The Sea - a piece to set any foot tapping. Next up, Setting of the Sun is a guitary, folky tune whilst the White Hare is a slower melodic piece. King & Country tells of a woman awaiting her lover’s return from the great war: a sensitive song but never depressing.

Much of Mr Lakeman’s material is drawn from West Country legends and folklore, including war, rape and accidental shootings (strangely still relevant today) but is never tempted into being overly sentimental. Lakeman is at his best on the violin led tracks but also skilfully utilizes the guitar to appeal to both the folk faithful as well as the ’folk-curious’. This album has a place in any modern collection.
