Faustus were slightly hampered by the venue’s variable acoustics but their more choral songs, especially Acre of Land and Brisk Lad, came across stunningly and were beautifully suited to the space.
The venue beguilingly changed as the natural light from the clerestory gave way to sensitively placed coloured lighting. Its a good job, as there was also an alcohol ban and bum-numbing pews.
Spiers & Boden were as compelling and slightly demented as ever. With easy confidence and wit they lead us through two sets mixing most of their new CD, Vagabond, with a few old favourites along the way.
The church setting lent Jon’s talk of font wattling was lent a new significance and a fouled-up an introduction lead to cursing and amusingly guilty looks.
As if this wasn’t enough they all joined forces for the encore in a rousing version of Rambling Sailor. That’s bound to send you home with a spring in your step.
