Reviews

Compared to his latest album, Boomerang, Half A Fruit Pie is a more folky offering, with traditional tune sets and ballads mixed with self penned material such as Toxic Haze and Unclothed Nocturnal Manuscript Crisis (now heard at Bellowhead gigs!)

Highlights include The Holland Handkerchief, which offers a chilling tale of love, death and spooky goings on, accompanied by some beautiful playing. The Gypsy Laddie is very catchy, and carries on this man’s habit of singing about bedroom antics! The Bozouki and Guitar playing thoughout the album is top class, and the word ’Beavers’ appears which is a bonus.

One problem with this album is that the different styles, traditional and modern, don’t always sit comfortable together, and this stops the album from flowing as gracefully as it could. Its almost as if there are too many ideas and influences for one CD. However Benji is the King of the Fretboard, and this album is well worth a listen.
