Ask Seth Lakeman a question...

Posted by Christopher Friedenthal on 02 May 2009

In two short weeks Seth Lakeman sets off on a tour of the UK . It kicks off on the 17 May 2009 at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and finishes on 3 June 2009 at Komedia in Bath. See our Gigs section for the full run-down.

Bright Young Folk will be meeting up with him when he hits London’s Union Chapel on the 24 May 2009 and we’d like you to tell us what we should ask him.

So, if there’s something you’ve always wanted to know, post it in the comments below and we’ll put the best suggestions to the man himself.

Please could you ask Seth if he has any plans to work again with Benji Kirkpatrick or Cormac Byrne?
We would love to see him play with them!!

I would like to know where Seth finds the stories that inspire him, did he grow up with them - does he research them? And, when is he coming back to Liverpool?!

Will you marry me?!

LOL!

What advice would you give to a young violinist/singer hoping for a career in Performing Arts/The Music Industry?
(Also, can you come do a gig in Bromley, South-East London any time soon? :D Thanks!)

What’s your favourite instrument to write on?

Seth - loved the new songs you played at Horsham in March (great gig, by the way). Nothing beats seeing you guys play live: any plans for a live album, or at least an album of live studio takes like ’Greed and Gold’? Would be splendid!

Hey Seth, wondering what your advice is to boosting a young bands publicity, any sure fire ways you know of getting some higher profile gigs than the usual pubs and folk clubs??

Stuart

Can I be greedy and ask three?

1. Really loved the new songs you played on the dates in March which leads to the obvious question: what are the plans for the next album?

2. In a recent interview (http://johncwilliamson.wordpress.com/2008/12/08/seth-lakeman/) you talked about maybe working with other producers on your next album. Your first four albums were produced with your brother Sean. How important has Sean been in developing your ’sound’ and how would working with a different producer change that?

and just in case that’s all too sensible:

3. When are you going to join Twitter so we can start stalking you like a real rock star?

Seth, what is the best piece of advice, musical and\or otherwise that you have been given and did it help you to keep things together in the harder times pre-Mercury awards?

PS Please, please include your lyrics on the next CD sleeve inner rather than have your record company put them on the website.

What do we have to do to get you to come to Australia?? :-)

Um, okay, apart from try and boost the Aussie dollar, LOL... or possibly turning up the throttle and sailing our little island a bit closer to the UK...

Hi Seth,

Have you any plans to work with Kate Rusby again? I’d love to hear a collaboration between you guys.

Any chance of a live anthology including Western Approaches live cuts?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers, Dan

With talk of you making a live record this year, how do you judge a good performance - is it by what works collectively as a band, as a soloist or by audience reaction? Will choosing your set list be different from choosing tracks for a studio album?

Hello Seth

I have been listening to Equation a lot lately and wondered you had a favourite album from that period. Thank you see you on The Mire Road Trip xx

Can I ask more than one question please?
It is interesting that your whole family, all three brothers, make your living from the same type of music (both of your brothers even have folk singers as life partners). Do you enjoy any other types of music or even find any inspiration from any other types of music?

Your faster songs are impossible not to dance to and have more of a beat than very traditional folk music. Is this because you simply enjoy more upbeat music yourself, or is this an attempt to reach a wider and perhaps younger audience who might be attracted by a less traditional sound?

The fact that you have this often more danceable sound plus you and Sean being extremely attractive has led to large chunks of your audience being adoring females. Does this irritate you a bit, looking out and seeing the first few rows filled with melting women, when you are really trying to get the message of your lyrics across and keep all these old English legends alive, or are you okay with all that and happy to attract a lot of women?

Question for Sean: you are a very talented guitarist and very good looking. Have you ever thought of going it alone or are you happy to continue to be part of your brother’s band and let him be the face and name?

Last one! Would you ever consider making a dvd of a live gig or gigs, as this would bring you and your music to an even wider audience?

Thanks!
