BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2011 - The Winners

Posted by Mary Stokes 09 February 2011

In a night of rambling speeches, star appearances and talk of spending cuts, the stars of the British folk scene gathered to celebrate their achievements over the past year.

The overall winners of the night were Chris Wood, Bellowhead and Eliza Carthy & Norma Waterson who each took home two awards, whilst there were performances from Laura Marling, Kate Rusby and Port Isaac’s Fisherman’s Friends amongst others.

Strangely there was no standing ovation when Donovan walked to the stage to collect his lifetime achievement award - Andy Irvine received a warmer welcome when he came on stage to present Ewan McClennan with the Horizon Award. But it was Andy Cutting who got the biggest applause of the night as he was awarded Musician of the Year.

And now on to the winners...

Best Duo: Nancy Kerr and James Fagan
Best Traditional Track: Poor Wayfaring Stranger - Eliza Carthy and Norma Waterson
Best Group: Bellowhead
Young Folk Award: Moore, Moss, Rutter
Musician of the Year: Andy Cutting
Best Original Song: Hollow Point - Chris Wood

Album of the Year - Gift - Eliza Carthy and Norma Waterson
Lifetime Achievement Award - Donovan
Best Live Act - Bellowhead
Good Tradition Award - Fisherman’s Friends
