Folk favourite takes to the West End stage

On 9th March 2011 one of the folk scene’s favourites Saul Rose takes to the West End stage in the role of the Song Man in the stage adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse.

Currently rehearsing six days a week, the role means that Saul will have to take a year off from the live music scene, but the various bands that he is involved with have been very understanding and supportive.

When asked about how a role on the stage performing the same thing day in day out compared to performing a live show as part of a band Saul had this to say:

“The role is very different to gigs, the communication with the audience is totally different and most of the music has underscore and or live brass band who live mostly in a cupboard. There’s click tracks so there’s a similarity to the gigs with Jim Moray. Unlike my usual music where the song is the story, the songs in warhorse facilitate the story of Albert and Joey. There are spaces in the music for dialogue and times where the music is very cut up and sporadic. It’s really more of an acting role than straight musician. Oh, and I bloody love it!”

All at Bright Young Folk would like to wish him luck with this new venture and to say Break a Leg!

Saul’s run in War Horse lasts until 12th November 2011, and the production is currently on at The New London Theatre.
