Damien was born in Peterborough but grew up in Norfolk, and was immersed in the folk scene from an early age through his family. He grew up listening to singers such as Peter Bellamy and Walter Pardon, and started playing the melodeon at the age of seven, before eventually moving onto English concertina, although he also plays guitar and button accordion.

Damien has been performing professionally since 1989. In the 90s he was a regular finalist in the Young Tradition Awards. He formed the Demon Barbers around 2001. He has also sung in a duo with Fay Hield, and can often be found performing with Mike Wilson. As part of the Demon Barber Roadshow Damien performs rapper, and he was a founder member of Black Swan Rapper, one of the top sides in the country.
