the bright young folk review

Having decided to part ways with his record company earlier in the year and release his new album Tales From The Barrel House on his own label, December has seen Seth Lakeman embarking on a short tour to promote the album.

Support for the tour was provided by Carus Thompson (who had travelled over from his native Australia for the tour) who was superb in warming up the population of Frome who had queued in the cold waiting for the doors to open.

With the audience nicely warmed and starting to get merry with festive cheer Seth took to the stage to an accompaniment of industrial bangs and scrapes, to open the show with a song from the new album More Than Money.

With a set list that mixed songs from the new album (Blacksmiths Prayer, Salt From Our Veins, Hard Road) with old favourites such as John Lomas, the time simply flew by until we are treated to a storming version of Kitty Jay.

A particular highlight of the evening was the song Solomon Browne, one that hasn’t appeared on the set list for a while but played tonight in memory of the crew as it was coming up to the 30th anniversary of the tragedy.

By the finish the show with the usual hoe-downs of Blood Upon Copper and Race To Be King, the whole audience was up and dancing, which just goes to show why Seth Lakeman’s live shows are still so popular.
