the bright young folk review

After successfully launching their new album Weave and Spin at Fay Hield & Jon Boden’s folk club Bright Phoebus in Sheffield a few days before, Lady Maisery chose the Slaughtered Lamb in London to host the second leg of their album launch.

For those of you who may not have heard yet about Lady Maisery, the band is made up of the vocal and musical talents of Hazel Askew (The Askew Sisters), Hannah James (Kerfuffle, Hannah James and Sam Sweeney and The Demon Barbers) and Rowan Rheingans (Fidola) and take their inspiration from the traditional folk songs and tunes of the UK and Northern Europe.

Starting off the set with I Know My Love, a traditional Irish song with accompaniment from Rowan on the fiddle, it was evident that the audience were going to be treated to a selection of songs and tunes from the new album.

As all three members of the band have a shared interest in the Nordic style of singing tunes called Diddling, we were shown how this works with Minoorne Labajalg.

Even with the band all being very accomplished musicians, it is in a cappella vocal harmonising where Lady Maisery really shine - renditions of The Capable Wife and a version of Rudyard Kipling’s My Boy Jack being excellent examples. Indeed their rousing version of Mary Ann had an almost 1940s Andrews Sisters sound to it with the lack of musical accompaniment.

As an encore the girls ended the evening with another example of diddling - The Bluebell Polka and The Primrose Polka, and as an extra treat Hannah put on her clogs and showed us why she’s considered one of the finest clog dancers in the country.
