Edison phonographs, stationed at either side of the stage, hinted at this being no ordinary evening. As the audience settled, wax cylinder recordings of the Golden Gate Quartet played, followed by an introduction from Mr Edison himself.

Boden played all of his apocalyptic album ’Songs from the Floodplain’, (set in an oil-less future, communities make their own entertainment, including a revival of folk-singing) interspersed with songs from his epic ’Folk Song a Day’ project. The show married these two strands of work very successfully. There were some surprises, including a wonderfully innovative version of Kate Bush’s ’Hounds of Love’ (four concertinas anyone?) and ’Rigs of the Time’ with a quartet of pizzicato fiddles, underpinned by Foot’s subtle but solid bass playing.

The Remnant Kings are versatile and virtuoso musicians - Boden, Harbron, Sweeney, and Sartin playing a multitude of instruments and, at one point, Sweeney playing fiddle and drums simultaneously using the bow as a drumstick. If this all sounds rather too clever, I can only say that the whole was much more than the sum of its parts. The complex textures and rich vocal harmonies aided by the phonographs (’Edith’ and ’Eric’) contributing remnants of music and sound to Boden’s compelling vision.

The mesmerising finale of Hoagy Carmichael’s ’Stardust’ was a delight and one that brought tears to my eyes. As Boden left the stage, the band played on, with Sartin’s haunting oboe floating over an echo of ’Stardust’ crackling from the phonographs.

To finish off the evening there was a singaround in the bar, generously led by Boden and his band, with contributions from young and old alike. One downside of Boden’s extraordinary vision is that, without oil, we would not get to experience performances like this!
