It’s intersting to hear the derisory comments; from the folk fathers at the various folk clubs I attend; about this album. But without this adventurous and excellent album I doubt that the steam train that is Bellowhead would ever have travelled to the station it is at now, the station they now worship at!

"With her long tall stockings and her midriff, working on a night shift, come and pick a daisy, drive me crazy, you know the piper pays me, and I can’t stop yet. Gotta get a little something for me, for me, gotta get a little something for me." It’s just as much about life today, as the shepherds of yesterday. The drunken princess’s are the new drunken sailors. These are folk songs for now, with tunes to make you sit up and listen, it’s not playford (again) and it’s all the better for it. If you’re young you’ll love it, folkie or not, and if your old, take those blinkers off and listen carefully, it WILL grow on you. An album not to be missed, get it while you can.

Jon Boden goes for a walk in a graveyard on a dark windy night, and meets not Buffy the Vampire Slayer but various ladies and possibly one cross dresser of the night! Very Rocky Horror. Actually the album is nothing like the Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman musical but takes the listener on a journey into some dark territory, before turning right and heading back into songs and sound that come straight from the heart, a broken heart.

My favourite song on the album has to be "Drunken Princess", a sad song but a great song with a fantastic chorus. Other highlights for me are the 1st track, "Get a little something", that’s the one with the lady of the night and the graveyard and "Win Some Lose Some Sally". This song sounds fantastic, Jon Boden’s vocal layered over a pounding basey war drum and reinforced with ferocious electric guitar - I like my folk with "rocks" in!

I’m not going to tell you about the rest of the album, that would spoil it, this is just a teaser trailer. You need to get it and listen to it for yourselves. Look for the "Painted lady".

"When you cry, when you smile and your laughing when you cry...Goodnight my drunken Princesses"
