Kate Rusby is one of the most popular and widely known contemporary talents in British folk music. Born into a musical family in Yorkshire, and sometimes known as ’the Barnsley Nightingale’, Rusby learned to play the fiddle, guitar and piano, and joined her parent’s ceilidh band at an early age.

After a festival debut at the age of 15, Rusby met Kathryn Roberts leading to the recording of the ’Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts’ album in 1995, winning the Folk Roots ’Album of the Year’ award. A series of highly regarded solo albums followed, from 1998’s ’Hourglass’ to the most recent ’Awkward Annie’.
Rusby has also been lead vocalist in ’The Poozies’ and was a member of the group ’Equation’ with such well known names as Seth and Sean Lakeman. Her song ’Wonderful Soul’ was featured in the TV show ’Billy Connolly’s World Tour of New Zealand’, while ’The Village Green Preservation Society’ became the theme tune to ’Jam and Jerusalem’. A duet with Ronan Keating ’All Over Again’ made it to number 6 in the singles chart.
In a rare recognition of folk music, ’Sleepless’ was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for 1999. Rusby has frequently featured at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, having won Folk Singer of the Year (2000), Best Album (2000), Best Original Song (2002) and Best Live Act (2006) as well as a further 2 nominations.
