bright young folk

Lau comprise some the most inventive and skilful instrumentalists to emerge in the folk world over the last few years. Formed in 2005 and named for the Orcadian word for natural light, they were rapidly recognised as a class act and became a big hit at festivals. read more...

Following their debut album ’Lightweights and Gentlemen’ and a 2008 Live album, Lau developed to another level with 2009’s ’Arc Light’.

The band consists of Kris Drever (vocals, guitar), and Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle), both from Scotland, together with Martin Green (piano accordion), originally from Cambridge and now resident in the Borders. Each of them is a master of their instrument, but Lau is so much more than the sum of its parts.

Their sound is characterised by intricate arrangements played at a scarcely believable speed. A typical Lau track builds an intricate web of interlocking instruments broken up by occasional discordant interludes. Because of this, they are a fabulously entertaining live act.
