Causley had already built up a reputation as a talented singer in his own right, having released his debut album in 2005, and then subsequently been nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award under the Horizon Award (best newcomer) category twice: in 2006 as a solo artist and then in 2007 as part of The Devil’s Interval.
At the same time, Mawkin were becoming established on the folk scene. With brothers David & James Delarre on guitar and fiddle respectively, Danny Crump on bass and Alex Goldsmith on melodeon, they had been making a name for themselves playing folk festivals. In 2005, they had released their debut six track EP, which was followed in 2006 by their debut full length album.
The two parties teamed up in late 2007 to work as Mawkin:Causley. Their debut EP, Cold Ruin, was released in 2008, and - quickly picking up a reputation as the ’boy band of folk’ - their debut album “The Awkward Recruit” followed in 2009.
They were nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2010 for both best band and best traditional track.
