Rachael is part of the first group of graduates from Newcastle University’s Folk and Traditional Music course. Since graduating, she has made quite an impact, firstly with Crosscurrent, a group formed with fellow students from the course, and subsequently as the only female member of Bellowhead.

After the split of CrossCurrent in 2007, Rachael formed The Rachael McShane Band which also features James Peacock (piano), Jonathan Proud (bass) and Adam Sinclair (drums).
