Growing up in Devon, the three Lakeman brothers were immersed in music from an early age. In their teens, they joined their parents, Joy and Geoff, in a family band (the imaginatively named Lakeman Family Band), playing at festivals, regattas, village fetes and steam fairs as well as busking in markets and bars.

The trio formed The Lakeman Brothers while still students, touring the folk world in a tiny car, with Sean on guitar, Sam on piano and Seth on violin.
A first album, Three Piece Suite, was recorded and released in 1994 to critical acclaim. The album was largely instrumental with the brothers unsure about vocals; however, Kathryn Roberts provided vocals on two tracks. As a result of this link up, Kathryn would invite the Lakemans to join her and Kate Rusby on tour as their backing band; this in turn led to the five forming Equation, and the end of The Lakeman Brothers as a separate band.
All three brothers have since gone to further success.
