Posted by Christopher Friedenthal on 18 February 2010

In part one of our two-part feature Jim Causley talks to Bright Young Folk about his folk show on BBC Radio Devon and the end of Mawkin:Causley (for now).

Please see our comments below for more on this from Mawkin’s Dave Delarre.

In part two published 19 February, Jim discusses his plans for two solo CDs and plays a song from the Devon-themed one.

Recorded backstage at The Goose is Out! Folk Club in East Dulwich, London, on 5 February 2010.

I’m sure there are a number of rumours going round at the moment- folkies love a gossip ;-) . Basically the truth of it all is that the band have decided to go on a bit of a hiatus for a while. Members of Mawkin have wanted to do other things for a number of years and due to the commitment to our touring schedules they just haven’t found the time.

Mr Causley is rather busy working on solo projects and wants to concentrate on them for a while so it seems logical to put the breaks on this project for a while. I’m afraid there is nothing dramatic to report, no break ups, no fights, no tvs thrown out of the window.

We love making music together and sure enough we’ll be back doing that with a new album sometime in the future. A massive thank you to anyone who has supported, followed and helped us over the years, without you guys none of it would of been possible.

Sorry to hear of the apparent demise of Mawkin:Causley, glad I managed to catch them at Cardiff recently.

However, I have to say "Oi, Jim! Don’t diss the older audience members mate"!

Obviously for this music to thrive we need more young people showing an interest, but us older folkies can still cut it at festies, you know.

Sorry to hear that M:C are taking a break, but so relieved it’s not a permanent one! Good luck with everything you are involved with in the meantime.

This is no surprise after the sad performance at Cheltenham on saturday night - more than obvious that things weren’t right

This is a terrible shame, I’ve only just recently got into this band and I thoroughly love their debut ’The Awkward Recruit’ there is soo many stand out tracks. This is a great loss to the folk scene.

I was also at Cheltenham Festival and I think I must of been watching a different concert to the above poster as I loved their performance and thought Jim was in fine form.

Good luck with everything lads and thankyou for the music.

So sorry this original, innovative band appears to have broken up - no other current folk band has anything close to their talent. The Awkward Recruit is a classic album - probably the best English folk music since the early Fairports. It would be a real tragedy if M:C did not collaborate in future to continue the journey on which they have only just embarked.
